About
Hi! My name is Alex Herr (Mrs. Herr), a math educator with 13 years of classroom experience and a soft spot for any student who needs extra help and encouragement.
I earned both my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Master of Education in Learning, Design, and Technology from Penn State. I have also earned a graduate certificate through the International Institute for Restorative Practices. Throughout my teaching career, I’m grateful to have had opportunities to present at local, state, and national conferences on innovative approaches to grading in the math classroom.
I have always liked math in the traditional sense, but I love math in ways that go beyond a focus on memorization, speed, and grades alone. I respect math problems and systems that welcome everyone in, allow for mistakes, support growth, and end in true understanding.
Some of my favorite moments as a teacher have happened in one-on-one conversations with students. Those conversations gave me the opportunity to figure out where a student was, listen to how they were thinking, and find a way forward that made sense for them. That’s what I hope to bring to tutoring: individualized attention, thoughtful instruction, and the time and space for students to ask questions, make mistakes, deepen understanding, and build confidence.
I’m excited to continue serving my local community through private tutoring and daily substitute teaching while pursuing a Doctor of Education (EdD). I love continuing to learn, and I’m especially interested in how we can make math more accessible, meaningful, and engaging for all students.
Subjects
Pre-Algebra
Pre-Algebra builds foundational skills for success in Algebra, including working with integers and rational numbers, expressions and equations, ratios and proportions, percentages, exponents, inequalities, graphing, and problem-solving.
Algebra 1
Algebra 1 focuses on the real number system, algebraic expressions, linear equations & inequalities, functions, linear functions & coordinate geometry, systems of equations & inequalities, polynomials & quadratic equations, and data analysis.
*With years of experience teaching Algebra 1 in Pennsylvania, I can offer targeted preparation for the Pennsylvania Algebra 1 Keystone Exam.
Algebra 2
Algebra 2 builds on Algebra 1 with more complex functions and algebraic relationships, including polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions, complex numbers, sequences & series, systems, and probability & statistics.
Calculus
Calculus explores how quantities change and accumulate through the study of limits, derivatives, and integrals. Topics typically include limits and continuity, differentiation, application of derivatives, integration, application of integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
How it works
Free Intro Call
Start with a relaxed 15 minutes with you (and your student, if they’d like) to talk about what’s going on in math class, what you’re hoping for, and whether we’d be a good fit.
When and Where
Choose a location to meet–home or neutral setting. Finalize a time to meet–weekday afternoons/evenings and weekend mornings.
Session Preparation
Email Mrs. Herr at least 2 days prior to our scheduled session with the topic(s) you’d like us to cover so we can make the most of our hour together. If you have specific resources/links to send, even better!
